Types of Breast Cancer

-There are many different types of breast cancer, that affect different parts of the breast, such as the ducts, lobules, or the tissue in between.
-The different types of breast cancer include:  Non-Invasive, which means it has not spread beyond the milk duct, Invasive, which means the cancer has spread to the surrounding breast tissues, Recurrent, which means breast cancer can reoccur after defeating it the first time, and Metastatic, which means the respread of the cancer once it reoccurs, breast cancers.  Also breast cancer occurs in men, but is very rare.

Here are detailed cancers of these types of breast cancers:

-Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) is the most common type of non-invasive breast cancer.  DCIS is called "non-invasive" because it hasn’t spread beyond the milk duct into any normal surrounding breast tissue. DCIS isn’t life-threatening, but having DCIS can increase the risk of developing an invasive breast cancer later on.

-Lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS) is an area(s) of abnormal cell growth that increases a person’s risk of developing invasive breast cancer later on in life.  LCIS is an indication that a person is at higher-than-average risk for getting breast cancer at some point in the future.

-Invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC) is the most common type of breast cancer. About 80% of all breast cancers are invasive ductal carcinomas.  Invasive ductal carcinoma can affect women at any age, it is more common as women grow older.  Also less common subtypes of IDC can occur, they include tubular carcinoma, medulla carcinoma, mucinous carcinoma, papillary carcinoma, and cribriform carcinoma, all of the breast.

-Invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC) is the second most common type of breast cancer after invasive ductal carcinoma.

-Paget's disease of the nipple is a rare form of breast cancer in which cancer cells collect in or around the nipple.

-Inflammatory breast cancer (IBC) is a rare and aggressive form of breast
cancer.  Inflammatory breast cancer usually starts with the reddening and swelling of the breast instead of a distinct lump and tends to grow and spread quickly.

-Triple-Negative Breast Cancer (TNBC) is a cancer that is very fearful for women who are diagnosed with it.  The tumors are very aggressive with a high risk of metastasis.  With this type of breast cancer, out of 190,000 new cases being diagnosed each year in the U.S, 10 to 20 percent are triple negative.  This type is also very hard for physicians to treat.

-Breast cancer in men is a disease that is very rare.  This cancer occurs in men less than 1% and because it is so rare with few cases, that makes it difficult to study.
